Eirmotus octozona – Eightbarrred Barb

Eirmotus octozona was described by Schultz in 1859. Their common name is Eightbarrred Barb, this is not surprisingly a reference to the eight stripes on their flank.

The genus name Eirmotus is a reference to the sensor pores on their heads. Octozona means “with 8 stripes”.

Description

Eirmotus octozona is a fairly calm, peaceful schooling fish that can be kept in the company of other calm fish. Keep them in a group of at least 7 specimen. The aquarium must be densely planted at the edges and background. Sufficient free swimming space must also be left open. A dark bottom and subdued light, for example by floating plants, make the colors stand out better. A regular water change is highly recommended.

They do not become larger than about 4 to 5 centimeters. Because of their somewhat shy nature, it is better not to combine them with very active or larger fish.

Origin

Asia; Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia. Their habitat is under pressure due to deforestation for the palm oil industry.

Diet

This is an omnivore. You can feed them small live food interspersed with vegetable food. Dry food is also accepted. You do them a great favor by occasionally giving them live food such as brine shrimp or daphnia.
